Low back pain is a very common complaint and can lead to disability. In fact, low back pain is the #1 reason for doctor visits in the United States, according to Chiro-Trust.org. More serious forms of low back pain can be accompanied by leg pain known as sciatica.
Sciatica is a broad term used to define pain extending down the leg. There can be many causes of sciatica, but mostly it is the symptom of a pinched nerve, either a peripheral nerve (in the leg) or a nerve root (where the nerves exit the spine). There can be many causes of nerve impingement: i.e., disc herniation, muscle spasm or imbalance, bone spurs, degenerative arthritis, etc.
If you have low back and leg pain that is not responding to medication, rest, or physical therapy, then the next appropriate action is an MRI referral by a doctor. Oftentimes MRI will reveal a disc issue of some type; bulging discs, disc herniation, degenerated disc, etc.
So, now what?? You know what is causing you all of the life altering pain… but… what can YOU do to fix it?
Non-surgical spinal decompression can be very effective in the treatment of low back and leg pain, oftentimes even preventing surgery. This procedure is a gentle stretch of the low back that most patients find relaxing. It is easiest explained as computer controlled traction. Typically treatment plans will be 10-20 visits over 1-2 months. We find that our patients experience great clinical outcomes under our specific protocol of spinal decompression (traction), spinal manipulation (chiropractic adjustments) and rehabilitative exercises.
Spinal decompression can help low back and leg pain if caused by a herniated, bulging, or degenerated disc, but your condition must be qualified by our doctor first. Spinal decompression has saved hundreds of properly qualified patients from back and neck surgery in our Tacoma office over the years. Our doctor has been performing safe and effective Spinal Decompression for over ten years.
