Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT)

Tacoma’s Chiropractor First to Offer Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT)

Dr. Turrubiate is excited to be the first chiropractor in Tacoma, WA to offer this new therapy which was recently approved by the FDA. “Low level” lasers, or “cold lasers”, are different from the lasers you may be familiar with that are used to cut or cauterize tissue. Cold lasers aren’t strong enough to damage tissue like skin, but they are strong enough for the emitted light to penetrate a few inches into your body. When used on an area of pain and/or discomfort, this light stimulates the cells of that region to produce extra energy which can be used to decrease inflammation -the major source of pain and discomfort.

How does it work?

Low level laser therapy (LLLT) or cold laser, is a painless, sterile, non-invasive, drug-free modality that is used for a variety of conditions such as, acute and chronic pain, body-contouring, acne and cellulite.

Housed within the mitochondria, the cell energy manufacturer, are receptors capable of absorbing distinct parameters of light. Think of these receptors like any drug receptors. When we consume a prescription medication, the compound is absorbed by the body and it locates a particular receptor, and based upon its molecular design, will bind to that receptor. Once the drug binds, a secondary reaction inside the cell takes place. A similar mechanism is observed when exposing the body to a particular color of light. During a laser treatment the light will penetrate the skin and is absorbed by this receptor within the mitochondria. Receptor stimulation with light promotes energy production, biochemical reactions, protein and growth factor synthesis, cell growth and proliferation and enhanced blood and oxygen flow.

What is 3LT™ – Low Level Laser Therapy?

Low Level Laser Therapy (3LT™) refers to the modality of applying a “low” energy or “low level” laser to tissue that stimulates cellular processes and thereby enhancing biochemical reactions. For example, studies show that LLLT increases ATP production in the mitochondria of the cell. Since more energy is now available, the cell may utilize this fuel to function or operate more efficiently.

How does it work?

Many theories exist as to the mechanism of action for Low-Level Laser Therapy(3LT™) but simply put, photonic energy is absorbed by the photo acceptor sites on the cell membrane which trigger a secondary messenger to initiate a cascade of intracellular signals that initiate, inhibit or accelerate biological processes such as wound healing, inflammation, or pain management.

What makes one laser different from another?

A laser can differ in its wavelength, power source or whether it is a continuous or pulsed wave form. The first lasers were used to cut, cauterize or ablate tissue and were classified as “hot’ lasers. “Cold”, “Low Energy” or “Low Level” lasers are used to enhance metabolic activity at the cellular level through non-thermal reactions.

How long are the treatments?

Treatments can vary in time from seconds to minutes depending on the condition. Research studies show that there may be a dose dependent response, so it may be more effective to treat at lower doses at multiple intervals then to treat a single time with a high dose.

What kind of care plans can be expected for laser therapy?

A treatment plan may vary, depending on the condition. For instance, an acute soft tissue injury or open wound may require multiple short treatments initially then the interval between treatments will lengthen as the condition improves.
